Someone on dA inquired as to what my influences were, and since I’ve been meaning to make one of these for a while, I obliged.

1. Joe Sorren-
Quite a few years ago, I tried to force my art into the generic thin-lineart-flat-colored world of the scene-haired and destiny-fulfilling canine comics that had a pretty big standing in dA at the time. It became incredibly frustrating to keep it up, as my art was pretty sub-par and I was constantly comparing it to people much older and more experienced than I was. I struggled to get my lines the perfect thickness, to make my characters have perfect anatomy and hair, to blend in with all these other artists. It was then that I saw Joe Sorren’s work, and it astounded me. It smashed to bits the idea that my art should look a certain way and instead showed me how interesting art could be. His work showed a disregard for anatomy, which opened the stylization door in my head that even rubber limbed cartoons and ultra-caricatured  designs couldn’t unlock. Aside from his surrealistic forms, he painted with a beautiful color palette and incorporated textures into his work which immediately struck my fancy and which I’ve loved ever since. I believe that his art was the thing that got me to push forms and take my first baby steps in stylization, as well as influence me to be mindful of including textures in my work. 
2. Shaun Tan-His art further stressed stylization and texture, but also included a bit of an introduction to composition and showed me that beautiful artwork can work wonderfully hand-in-hand with storytelling. What I find most beautiful about is work is that it has an amazing flow and attention to detail (in nearly every medium). His stories, too, break the mold of more traditional writing; they’re whimsical pieces of work that are a bit strange and experimental, but always beautiful. He inspires me to pursue telling my own stories, something I’m still struggling with, but improving on.
3. Jhonen Vasquez-Well his work uhhh… really appealed to my secret love of cartoon violence and after watching all of Invader Zim in a week and reading through JTHM and Squee my style took a critical hit from his and learned angles. A bit of a refresher after Sorren’s bendy-spaghetti arms.
4. Anya McNaughton- An artist who draws animals (mostly) in a really nice style and uses lighting beautifully. Her art made me want to try to use more bold shapes and proportions in mine, as well as explore lighting.
5. Fairytales-More of a storytelling influence than a artistic one, fairytales (and I’m talking the old and gruesome ones) instilled in me a love of fantasy that I’ve never grown out of. And it wasn’t just magical things, really, but the otherworldliness of even some of the more normal ones is something that I strive to echo in my own work. It also interested me that many of these stories had definite cause and effect plots, where all extraneous things were left out and the only things left quickly became of importance.
6.Cory Loftis- His work (mainly the stuff on his tumblr) has a boldness to it that I really admire. It also has the patterns and textures that I admire, but applied on more casual art than Sorren’s or Shaun Tan’s. Looking at his art encourages me to be more bold with large blocks of color and take note of textures even in more loose drawings.
7.Harry Clarke- Another book I grew up reading was Poe’s “Tales of Mystery and Imagination” illustrated by Harry Clarke. Clarke’s intricately decorated illustrations (which I stared at more than the words on the pages) greatly widened my texture & pattern vocabulary (and probably also gave me a questionable fashion sense for a while ahhahah). 
8. Carter Goodrich-My favorite character designer!! A huge inspiration, his work has amazing textures and a great variation in tones. His shading is to die for. I’ve seen a lot of character design, but it’s often at the extremes of the simplistic-to-incredibly-rendered  scale, which can get a little monotonous to see, but his work is nestled perfectly in between the two. His use of shapes and form is beautiful, and his textures and tones are fantastic as well. From him I learned to try not to stay on the extreme edges of that scale, but to try mixing the two up occasionally.
9. The Flaming Lips-My favorite band, and some of the creators that I admire most in any art form. How fearlessly they express themselves (and how WELL) is absolutely inspiring. I’d love to be that creative and brave, haha! Not only is their music motivational, but Wayne Coyne’s artwork is pretty great too and the color palettes he uses have become some of my favorites. 
10. Pixar-There are few movies that feel as sincere to me as a Pixar film (the other studio that makes sincere movies I will talk about in a bit). Their ideas, even for their sequels, are fresh and interesting (their characters and stories especially!) and I strive to become skilled enough to be able to contribue towards their work. 
11. The Dark Crystal-A fantastic movie that recharges my love of fantasy every time I watch it. The settings and character designs are whimsical, but not like a set, they’re rough and dirty and feel real when you see the characters interact with them. This definitely has a lot of influence on my work and stories, especially with Clyde Lightbringer. It’s not action all the time, but has quite a few quieter moments that make the film feel more realistic and personal.
12. Laika-Another studio that makes sincere films. Beautiful, well designed, heart wrenching films that I couldn’t help but fall in love with. Every aspect of these films I admire, and their styling looks like drawings come to life. The realness of their movies, especially of ParaNorman, is so unique to these films, in my opinion. Plus, their styling has really influenced mine each time on of their films came out (look out for that in 2014, haha). Another studio that I wish to be skilled enough to be a part of in the future, and that hope is what drives me to improve as an artist and try my best in all that I work on.
